Drafting of the master plan for Waste management in Djibouti City

The organization and means for the collection and transport of waste produced in Djibouti have seen significant changes and improvements since the 2010s but due to the expansion of Djibouti City, the production of waste has increased in recent years.
In this respect TiEG and its team of five experts have been contracted by the Delegation of the European Union to Djibouti to work on a development of the Solid Waste Management Master Plan for Djibouti City.
The objective is to build a sustainable strategy for the waste management problem, adapted to the local context, and to improve the living conditions of the population. In its work, the team will take into account and follow the recommendations of the Guide “Solid Waste: guidelines for successful planning” of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) which emphasizes that good planning allows: (i) the creation of realistic and feasible waste management schemes; (ii) the construction and operation of high-quality waste management systems and infrastructures; and (iii) present the most economically affordable ways for companies.
The work of experts will be performed in three consecutive phases starting with a diagnostic of the current and prospective situation, including the characterization of the context of Djibouti City, diagnostic of the typology and waste streams, organization of the current waste management system and the economy and financing of the waste management system. Phase 2 will focus on a definition of the Waste Management Master Plan and Choice of Strategic Planning and phase 3 will focus on a development of the 5-year action plan. The assignment started in April 2021 and is expected to be finalised in April 2022.
